Research proposal abstract:
A retrospective observational cohort study from the LROI database will be performed to compare the long term incidence of revision procedures performed for the treatment of postoperative prosthetic joint infection (PJI) between patients treated with a single preoperative antibiotic prophylaxis and patients treated with multiple shot antibiotic prophylaxis following primary arthroplasty of hip or knee.
This study will be a follow-up study of an earlier project. In 2018 we have evaluated which antibiotic prophylaxes (type of antibiotic and duration of prophylaxis) were regularly used in the Netherlands, and we compared the PJI rate (defined as revision for infection as registered in the LROI database) between a single-shot and multiple shot antibiotic prophylaxis for the 2011-2015 cohort with a follow-up of one year. The outcomes of our study were published in Acta Orthopaedica [1].
Our results showed no difference in PJI risk at one year, but a possible trend toward higher revision at the end of the follow-up (for hip, not knee). With the current study, we want to evaluate whether the recognised trend leads significant differences in PJI revision rate at 2-, 5- and 10 years follow-up.
